Guides

Language plays a powerful role in shaping all of our relationships. The words we use — whether in conversations, reports, meetings or communications — can either strengthen connections or create barriers.

The guides below can be used to build public understanding, improve practice and ground our relationships with children, young people and families in both trust and respect.

Current Guidance

These guides are designed to help you adopt communication approaches that are rights-based, strengths-based and trauma-informed. All of our guides have been designed and produced in partnership with our Voices of Experience Reference Group and are shaped by robust framing research conducted by FrameWorks UK.

“The first principle of making this about what every child needs to thrive has been really key. Previously, we would have gone straight in with ‘every child who comes into care has experienced trauma and loss’ as a first thing. And now that’s not what we do. I’m really pleased about that, as it feels much more respectful and sensitive.”
